Thursday's Children: Data

Inspired by data.

I have a brand new toy...

It's called the UP health band by Jawbone, and it basically helps me track how active I am during the day and how much I sleep during the night. By syncing the band with an iPhone app, I can see fancy shmancy bar graphs of how long it took for me to go to sleep, how much deep sleep I got, and how many times I woke up during the night.

In other words, data.

So what, you say? Well, data is knowledge, and knowledge is power. If I can learn the factors that lead to those good nights — when I get lots of deep sleep — I can try to replicate that every night, changing my habits slightly as I get better and better sleep.

In other words, quantifying my sleep produces data, data produces knowledge, and that knowledge leads to better sleep.

Will the same thing work for writing? I dunno. But I'm willing to try it out. I'll measure how much I produce during my writing sessions, track that every day, and use that data to determine how to write better, faster. Hey... it's worth a try.

Have you ever used data to improve your productivity?
